about

Read if context is your thing...

Most of the tracks on this album are quite old, and even dated to some extent. I was actually apprehensive about laying these tracks side-by-side until a few days ago. It's hard to look backward at old compositions with fondness, but recently several of my older compositions have been resurfacing and people have been reacting positively to them.

When I bother looking through older works, I usually react with revulsion at old compositions, only thinking about how naive and artistically underdeveloped I was. These things don't seem to matter to some people. Even though some of these tracks could not exist for all I care, it is not for me to decide whether these works should be relegated to obscurity or placed in the public eye. I don't mean to say that these pieces are profound in any way, but I figure I can at least strive for that kind of reaction. Also, I do still enjoy some of these tracks.

This is why I have decided to call these works "Artifacts". They are old and naive, and I hope I have progressed artistically since then, but they are historically important to me in that they were at least sincere at the time of their creation. Also, I like the term "indie classical" to describe them since I approached their composition with very little resources at my disposal and very little formal training. Some tracks were composed and arranged using free orchestral libraries and soundfonts, which is relatively lo-fi compared to what I am writing with now.

There are pieces of several different genres mixed in here, so let me clarify my intention in doing so. I have always wanted to a convey a sense of location or atmosphere to my pieces. I think locations help us experience the emotions in the piece in a more interesting way, since they invoke more than simply the auditory senses. I often have a particular location in mind when I compose a piece, and I try to have the pieces reflect those places. I think the drone tracks help build the sense that you are going from one location to the next, and the instrumental tracks populate those locations to some degree.

Thank you for your support.
